Prof. Dr. Mehmet Birhan Yılmaz was born on March 11, 1974, in Torbalı, İzmir. He graduated from Adana Science High School in 1991 and began his medical education at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine (English Program) the same year. After completing his medical degree, he began his specialization in cardiology at Turkey High Specialization Hospital in 1998 and became a certified Cardiologist in 2003.
In 2005, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cardiology at Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Medicine and earned the title of Associate Professor in December 2006. In 2007, he studied at Harvard Medical School’s Advanced Heart Disease and Heart Failure Unit with a Turkish Society of Cardiology (TKD) fellowship. Between 2009-2010, he conducted research on heart failure at Paris Diderot University Lariboisiere Hospital with a TÜBİTAK Postdoctoral Fellowship.
He was honored as a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) in 2010 and promoted to the rank of Professor in 2012. For his outstanding contributions to heart failure research, he received the TÜBİTAK Incentive Award in 2012. Following this, he served on TÜBİTAK’s Health Sciences Research Group Advisory Board and the Executive Board between 2014-2017.
Prof. Yılmaz chaired the Heart Failure Working Group of the Turkish Society of Cardiology from 2014 to 2016, leading the preparation of the “Roadmap for Heart Failure in Turkey.” He was a member of the TKD Board of Directors from 2016 to 2018.
In 2015, he earned the titles of Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and European Heart Failure Association (FHFA). Since 2019, he has been a faculty member at Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Cardiology, and has published over 300 scientific articles.
In 2024, he was appointed Vice President of TÜSEB. Currently, he serves as the Chairman of the Ethics Committee for Non-Interventional Studies at Dokuz Eylül University. Prof. Yılmaz is fluent in English, married, and has two daughters.
