Yoshiyuki Sankai earned a Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Tsukuba in Japan in 1987. He has advanced through roles as an assistant professor, associate professor, and professor at the Graduate School of Systems and Information Engineering, University of Tsukuba. Dr. Sankai also served as a visiting professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, USA. Currently, he is a professor and the Executive Research Director at the Center for Cybernics Research, as well as the Director of F-MIRAI at the University of Tsukuba. Additionally, he is the President and CEO of CYBERDYNE Inc., and a Program Director for the Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) under the Cabinet Office of the Government of Japan.
Dr. Sankai has held key leadership roles, including Leader/PM for the FIRST and ImPACT programs initiated by the Japanese Cabinet Office, and Business Producer for the Program for Building Regional Innovation Ecosystem by MEXT. He has served as an Executive Board Member of Advanced Robotics, a member of the Global Agenda Council on Robotics & Smart Devices, a Center Partner at the Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, a member of the Global Future Council of Production, and a member of the Global Precision Medicine Council of the World Economic Forum (WEF).
Dr. Sankai is a fellow of the Robotics Society of Japan (RSJ) and the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE). He has also been appointed as an International Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA).
